10 Best male polo players in the world

Water polo is a type of sport that encourages athletes to step out of their comfort zone and face things that require a lot of physical strength and commitment. Because of this, those that are likely to choose this game as a career path know that without sacrifice there are no results to show off.

Although it’s hard to make a list with the best male water polo players in the world, we’ve done our best to include the ones that have managed to stand out over the past years because of their talent and ability to be part of a team.

Filip Filipovic

Born in Serbia, Filip is a water polo player that was voted as one of the best athletes in the world thanks to his skills and medals he achieved with this national team.

In 2008 and 2012 he won bronze medals with the Serbia men’s national water polo team at the Olympics. Furthermore, in 2016 he went full speed and took off a gold medal that he shared with the rest of the Serbian team.

He’s been awarded the European title for five times and the world title for two times, in 2009 and 2015. At the World Championships in 2011, Filip was voted the Most Valuable Player.

On top of this, the FINA Magazine honored him with the title of the ‘Athlete of the Year’ in 2011 and 2014.


Dénes Andor Varga

Dénes is a Hungarian water polo player, member of the gold-winning national team at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Currently, he is playing for the Ferencváros team.

Among the medals he has won we can mention the gold medal at the World Championship in 2013, the bronze medal at the European Championship in 2016, the silver medal at the FINA World League in 2014, and the silver medal at the FINA World Cup in 2014.


Andrija Prlainović

Serbia is another country that has received excellent international scores with her water polo team of athletes. Andrija is an excellent water polo player that won bronze medals at the Olympics in 2008 and 2012. In 2016, he managed to take home the gold medal.

Awarded for his abilities to help the Serbian team reach the top, he held the World record in 2009 and 2015 as well as the European title in 2009, 2012, 2014, and 2016.

Born in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Andrija was discovered thanks to the PVK Jadran youth system that aims to find new talents each year.

He scored his two major goals at the European Championship in 2012. Along with the Serbian national water polo team, he took part in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.  


Duško Pijetlović

Another member of the Serbian national water polo team was Duško Pijetlović, who won bronze medals during the 2008 and 2013 Olympic Games. Plus, in 2016 he came home with a well-deserved gold medal.

He won three consecutive Euroleague titles while playing for three different water polo teams: in 2011 with Partizan, in 2012 with Pro Recco, and in 2013 with Crvena Zvezda.


Sandro Sukno

Sandro Sukno is a well-known Croatian water polo player who competed in the Summer Olympic Games in 2012 where he won the gold medal along with his national team.

At the moment, Sandro is playing for Pro Recco, an Italian water polo team. In addition to his talent and achievements, his father, Goran Sukno, was a gold medalist at the Summer Olympics held in Yugoslavia in 1984.

In 2017, Sandro won the prize for the Best Water Polo Player of the 2016-2017 season.

Tony Azevedo

This Brazilian-born water polo player is a Stanford University graduate that has managed to become internationally renowned for his incredible talent and number of medals he achieved.

Called ‘The Savior’, Tony is considered to be one of the best water polo athletes in the history of U.S.A. He currently holds the captain position in the U.S. National Men’s water polo team.

After graduating university, Tony Azevedo signed a contract with Bissolati Cremona, a water polo team located in Italy. He played there for three seasons, scoring 63 goals. Then, in 2007 he joined the US national team and competed at the Melbourne World Championships in 2007.

Before the Summer Olympics in 2012, Tony was named the captain of the American national water polo team.


Ioannis Fountoulis

Finally, we’ve got a Greek representative in our chart and no other but the great Ioannis Fountoulis. This water polo player competed at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016. Aside from this, he won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2015.

Ever since the year 2009, Ioannis has been a member of the Olympiacos team, in Greece. Nova sports named him the Most Valuable Player in Greece for the 2014-2015 water polo season.


Viktor Nagy

Victor Nagy is a water polo goalkeeper for the Hungarian National Team. He started playing water polo from an early age, at only 10, at the BVSC Sport Club in Budapest. In 2006, Viktor made a nice appearance playing for his national team. From then on, he went on winning medal after medal. So, in 2013, Victor won the world title, and in 2012 and 2016 he competed with the national team at the Olympics.

At the 2016 European Championship, he was declared the Best Goalkeeper.


Andro Buslje

Andro competed both in 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics with the Croatian national water polo team. He won the gold medal in 2012.

He is left-handed and plays center defeater. The most interesting aspect regarding his career is that he started playing water polo at the age of 12. In 2005 he made his national debut.


Pietro Figlioli

Although Pietro was born in Brazil, he plays for the Italian water polo team. Moreover, he won two medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

In 2012, the Italian Olympic Committee honored him with the Gold Collar of Sporting Merit award.
